About Us
The Federation of Awarding Bodies (FAB) is a trade association, representing organisations that award vocational qualifications in the United Kingdom.
There are over 100 Ofqual recognised awarding bodies that are full members of FAB. These range from awarding bodies that issue less than 2,000 certificates to those issuing over 50,000 certificates and they represent a range of sectors.
FAB also has an increasing number of associate members who are stakeholder organisations that are keen to become more closely involved with the work of the Federation. Non-Ofqual recognised bodies are included in this membership group. Associate members must meet certain criteria which can be seen here.
Our members provide vocational qualifications that are used by the full range of educational and training providers and are also used by employers with their workforce including apprentices. The qualifications that our members offer range from ones that are designed to prepare young people for the world of work to those that lead to professional body membership, from an introduction to an employment sector such as engineering to a licence to practice in in a particular job role. The UK Vocational Qualifications Reform Programme was completed early in 2011 which required all vocational qualifications to be submitted to the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). Vocational qualifications assess individual's knowledge and skills and this is done in a number of ways including practical exercises, observation, project work, compiling a portfolio of evidence and by using the skills in the workplace. Importantly all the learning outcomes that are set out in the qualification specification have to be assessed and passed by the student. These assessments are checked by the awarding bodies who will visit the providers and workplaces regularly, look at student work and check assessments.
