CQFW

The CQFW, overseen by the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) within the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Social Fund (ESF) in conjunction with awarding bodies and SSCs, will bring all learning including mainstream qualifications offered in Wales, into a single unifying system.

FAB received funding from ESF/DCELLS to support awarding bodies implementing credit based units and qualifications in Wales. In particular, a comparative analysis of Awarding Body credit practice was undertaken to inform and support the development of credit practice in Wales and clarification was provided to awarding bodies over roles, responsibilities and the systems required.

A document ‘Learning from experience - implementing credit in the CQFW: A Good Practice Guide for Awarding Bodies’ was produced in January 2006. The guide aims to provide practical guidance and support materials for awarding bodies preparing qualifications for inclusion in the CQFW.

A project on mutual recognition was then completed to enable credit accumulation and transfer to take place to support learners in gaining recognition for their achievement. FAB worked with awarding bodies to develop and test draft principles of mutual recognition of similar awarding body units to facilitate the cohesion of the CQFW, and considered how units could be written to facilitate mutual recognition.

Further work around capacity building is ongoing.
