The Sectoral Approach to a Skilful Future
The aim of this Conference is to celebrate how employers work through their Sector Skills Council (SSCs) to improve business performance through skills development of individuals.
A financial crisis, a crippling recession and an impending General Election have a profound effect on the shaping of the UK skills landscape, not to mention the implications of the Government’s Skills for Growth White Paper. The impact and value of SSCs cannot be underestimated in this landscape.
The road to recovery and prosperity centres on skills development and SSCs, driven with the strength and support of UK employers, large and small, remain at the heart of the UK’s economic recovery.
The UK’s SSCs are employer–owned organisations with executive boards comprising around 350 leading UK employers covering 1.7m UK enterprises and 90% of the UK workforce.
SSCs represent employers’ views on skills which is even more important given the current economic challenges. They aim to establish, advance and maintain the education, skills and training of people employed in business and industry, including the public sector.
They set and raise standards in the UK, approve qualifications in England, Northern Ireland and Wales and provide labour market intelligence (LMI) on their sector, which includes employment rates, skills levels and other relevant data.
The Alliance, formed in April 2008, is the collective voice for the SSCs.
This Conference is the first UK Conference for the Alliance and also signposts the completion of the UKCES re-licensing process. It demonstrates that SSCs are a key resource for both employers and employees as the UK moves forward from the recession.
Day 2:
3rd February 2010
QCF Conference
The 3rd of February will see the hosting of a special conference dedicated to exploring the latest policy implications of the emerging Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).
The day will provide delegates with an opportunity to hear from representatives from Ofqual, BIS and key employers who are steering the direction of the QCF. Delegates will also be able to attend a range of seminars which describe how the flexibility that the QCF offers has been used to resolve development issues faced by specific sectors and sub-sectors of industry.
As a result, it is hoped that delegates will leave with a clearer understanding of the overall direction of the QCF, and stimulated in regards to the options they have in terms of its practical application.
The conference is targeted at anyone who has direct engagement with qualification development and implementation including Qualifications specialists with SSCs & SSBs, Awarding Organisations and employers.
The conference is resourced with funding provided through the QCDA’s QCF readiness programme. Attendance on this day will be free of charge.
The specific aims of the QCF Conference are listed below:
Aims:
- To provide SSCs and SSBs with an opportunity to gain the most up to date policy statements in regards the QCF
- To enable SSCs and SSBs to share good practice and to learn how others have tackled key QCF issues
- To provide SSCs, SSBs and awarding organisations with an opportunity to more fully understand their respective roles and pressures in the development and delivery of the QCF
- To provide a forum for the sharing of good practice between SSCs, SSBs and awarding organisations
