Next steps for degree apprenticeships in England - funding, quality assurance and widening participation

Morning, Tuesday, 30th April 2019

Central London

This timely seminar will examine the next steps for degree apprenticeships in England.

It will be an opportunity for delegates to discuss the way forward for funding following the outcome of the Funding Band Review currently being finalised by the Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA). Delegates will consider the conclusions of the IfA review - which aims to ensure value for money for employers and government - along with the likely impact of government’s review of post-18 education on the affordability of degree apprenticeships.

Sessions on funding will also address the extension of the IfA mandatory qualifications policyto degree apprenticeships, and the implications on university access to funding and the expansion of degree apprenticeships going forward.

Delegates will also discuss quality assurance in degree apprenticeships, following concern from the sector over which bodies, including the IfA, OfS and QAA, hold responsibility for ensuring quality of degree apprenticeships.

Sessions will consider how universities can ensure comparability of degree apprenticeships with traditional forms of study, and how employers, universities and other training providers can collaborate to form more effective complaints procedures for apprentices.

Further sessions will outline issues surrounding widening participation, following the recent publication of data on the profile of degree apprentices, showing that female students, BAME students, and students from poorer backgrounds are underrepresented. Those attending will discuss strategies for widening access and improving awareness of degree apprenticeships in schools and colleges, which has been outlined as a key focus of the National Apprenticeship Service for the next two years.
